'Kinky' Allowed on Texas Ballot but Not 'Grandma'

Secretary of State Roger Williams ruled that the musician Kinky Friedman could be listed on the ballot in the November election for governor as Richard "Kinky" Friedman. Mr. Friedman has used the nickname in publishing and on stage. Mr. Williams rejected a request by State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn to be called "Grandma" on the same ballot. Whether that qualified as a nickname was a minor consideration, said a spokesman, Scott Haywood. More important was that it tied in with Ms. Strayhorn's campaign slogan, "One Tough Grandma." Sloganeering is prohibited on Texas ballots.
